EIGHT SECONDS IN BURWELL

Photographs by David Hunnicutt

Having photographed this mayhem firsthand, I am utterly convinced that there is no experience that can match bull riding–none. From the moment a cowboy enters the bucking chute, there emanates a kind of exquisite tension that’s hard to describe. Building to a brilliant crescendo, the dance commences when the gate opens.

And then for eight magnificent seconds, life is lived entirely in the here and now–the only thing that matters for cowboy and spectator alike is the movement of an angry, 1,000 pound bull situated just south of a cowboy’s back pockets. There is no other experience quite like it.

Geographically positioned as the gateway to the great western plains, Burwell has hosted the State’s largest rodeo for the last 86 years.
