Rising from the ashes like the proverbial phoenix, Roller Derby is back with a vengeance. And with the remarkable athleticism, aggression, and attitude possessed by today’s female athletes, Roller Derby is a whole lot more than “keep turning left and hurry back.”
Having partaken of this guilty pleasure firsthand, I can testify that Roller Derby is garnering a cult-like following. With a resurgence in all 50 states, one could argue that it may even be the next cultural phenomenon in American sport.
So what’s fueling the public’s desire to embrace Roller Derby?
Perhaps it’s our need to feel like we are a part of something that’s non-commercial and true to the integrity of the sport itself. Or maybe it’s the innate desire to feel like we are part of referent group that’s committed to a common cause. Or maybe, just maybe, it’s that Roller Derby presents the raw and raucous opportunity to watch athletes who like to travel at high speeds and hit others so hard that their kids will be born dizzy.
For now, the jury is still out.
