The North American Strongman Competition is perhaps the most intense sporting event in America. The Strongman competition vows to push athletes to the very edge of their physical and mental capabilities. I can assure you, this competition lived up to its promise. The event featured here was a regional qualifying venue and consisted of five events: the log press, tire flip, farmer’s walk, anchor drag, and truck pull.

Beginning with the log press, athletes must lift and press 300 lbs–a task that requires tremendous upper body strength and torso stability. The next event is the tire flip. In this event, participants must flip an 800 lb tractor tire more than 60 feet in a timed competition. To do this, athletes must have enormously strong hands, forearms, and legs. The third event is a grueling event known as the Farmer’s walk. Here, Strongman competitors must lift, shoulder and carry 350 lbs in a sprint type race. Particularly difficult, the Farmer’s Walk tests vertical lifting ability as well as propulsion and balance. To close out the six hour competition, athletes must drag a 400 lb anchor 25 yards and finally, pull an 18,000 lb truck 60 feet in 75 seconds. The truck pull challenges not only the athlete’s strength, power, and endurance but their sheer will to move this behemoth vehicle.

With temperatures exceeding 100 degrees, this event was one of the most remarkable I have ever seen.
