WHITEY CONNORS

I met Whitey Connors quite by accident.

After refueling at a full service gas station in Anton, CO, the proprietor–a genuinely nice man–asked me if I had ever seen a million bushels of wheat. Thinking that I was about to become the punch line for the local yokels, I cautiously disclosed that I had not.

Preparing for the blow, I steadied myself and awaited the inevitable. To my surprise, I was immediately escorted to an open field situated directly behind the station.

It was there I met Whitey.

“Hello young fella, I’m Whitey. What d’ya think of it?”

Like something out of a David Lynch film, I found myself standing toe to toe with the largest pile of grain I’d ever seen.

“Over a million bushels–biggest crop in 20 years,” announced Whitey.

With impeccable timing, Whitey then grabbed my hand in a vigorous handshake and put his other hand on my shoulder. “Let me show you around.”

With a heart as big as that grain pile, Whitey Connors then proceeded to show me kindness in the greatest of measure. We walked and we talked–well, mostly he talked. And when it was time for me to leave, Whitey let me know that he was glad to have met me–let me reiterate, he let me know that he was glad to have met me.

Needless to say, the good fortune was all mine.

Whitey Connors has been a truck driver for more than 50 years. Never married, Whitey likes to play cards in his spare time. He enjoys a cold glass of beer every now and then.
