Millwork ain’t easy
Millwork ain’t hard
Millwork it ain’t nothing
But an awful boring job
I’m waiting for a daydream
To take me through the morning
And put me in my coffee break
Where I can have a sandwich
And remember
Then its me and my machine
For the rest of the morning
For the rest of the afternoon
And the rest of my life
–E.L. Harris
In the early 1900’s, thousands of people found work at Nebraska Mills. Like most jobs during that time, the working conditions were less than ideal. Poor sanitation, unsafe practices, and long hours all took their toll on the men and women who worked the mills. But perhaps the biggest enemy of all was the day-in and day-out soul-stealing monotony of the job itself. Coming home in the evening, many would curse their fate and wonder how something like this could happen to a person.
