It’s the end of the summer and in small towns across Nebraska people are busily preparing for the county fair. For one week every August, women will struggle to make ready dishes and present produce in hopes of winning a coveted blue ribbon. Beauty queens will prepare for their 15 minutes of local fame. And every guy in the county will be frantically tightening lug nuts in hopes of claiming first prize in the demolition derby and/or the truck and tractor pull. And for those who are not showing, posing, or competing, there is always the anticipation of the carnival rides.
Although outsiders poke fun at the county fair, they are important events in the lives of a lot of people. With more than a century of history, the county fair remains a summertime tradition and a way of life for the people of Nebraska.
