The Sonoran Desert is one of the largest and hottest deserts in all of North America. With an area of approximately 120,000 square miles, the Sonoran Desert receives about three inches of rainfall annually although there have been periods in recent history where this territory has received no rain for more than three years in a single stretch.

Temperatures reach approximately 120 degrees in the daytime with surface temperatures peaking at somewhere around 180 degrees. Despite little rainfall and blistering temperatures, the Sonoran Desert is home to more than 2000 species of plants including the Saguaro cactus.

While not federally listed as an endangered species, Saguaro cactus are protected from illegal collection.
