LIFE’S LESSONS

“There are years worth of history in this shed. In fact, some of my best memories are stored here.”

Positioning himself so that he could survey the entire room, Glendon Johnson gently leaned back against the rough wooden wall, folded his arms, and quietly reflected on his life as a cowboy and a rancher.

“It’s hard to put into words how much I love this place.”

“You know, when I was a kid, my mother used to put Shakespeare in my saddle bags–and she made sure I read em’. I guess she figured that if I was going to be a cowboy, I was going to be a smart cowboy. She always told me, ‘Glendon, work hard; read your bible; and above all else, treat every person you meet with kindness.’”

Looking down at his worn boots, Glendon’s eyes welled up with tears, “Those are pretty good lessons for a mother to teach her son.”

“Sometimes, when I come in here by myself, I can hear her voice.” Turning toward me, he smiled, “And you know what? She’s still telling me the same things.”

Glendon Johnson grew up strong under the guidance of loving parents. Despite modest means, he graduated from the University of Utah and Harvard Law School. After leading several major U.S. companies, Glendon Johnson returned home to Castle Valley Ranch in Emery, Utah.

At 83, he still works hard, reads his bible, and treats every person he meets with kindness.
