Pulling back the sleeve of her hand-me-down winter coat, Jolene Miller picked impatiently at her watch.
“Call goddammit.”
There was no denying it this time, trouble had checked-in for an extended stay–and everybody knew it.
As she waited nervously for the phone to ring inside the booth, Janine Miller was doing her best to keep it together.
“How could I be so stupid? They always say they’ll be there if anything happens. I should have known better…I should have known better.”
Fighting back the tears, Janine Miller was learning that girls like her don’t get phone calls when they really need them. Having been kicked in the teeth by this reality, she was now down to her last option.
Pulling open the door, she stepped out onto the sidewalk. Vulnerable, exposed and afraid, Janine Miller turned toward the bus station.
Just then, it started to rain.
