SATURDAY MORNING

Stepping back to get a better perspective, Clinton “Walt” Walters was moving in for the big finish.

“I remember when I first got started in this business, I used to give people a hat on their way out the door. I really learned by trial and error. And, believe me, there were a lot of errors.”

“But people around here have been good to me.”

“This young man in the chair right now has been getting his hair cut here since we were just out of high school–except back than he had a lot more hair.”

Looking out of the corner of his eye, Henry Hagen winked and smiled. “Yeah, and I’ve always wondered why prices keep going up if I’ve got less hair to cut.”

Grabbing his wrist, Walters clucks, “Careful Henry, I feel the palsy comin’ on.”

As laughter breaks out, Walt Walters removes the cape from Hagen’s shoulders like a professional toreador.

Rising from the chair, Henry Hagen walks past the mirror without a glance and puts a $10 bill on the counter.

Heading for the door, Hagen issues a reminder to his best friend of 50 years, “We’ll expect you tonight at 6:00 for dinner. Belle’s making pot roast.”

Clinton “Walt” Walters and Henry Hagen have been the best of friends since the 6th grade. Except for the time Walters was in the hospital for back surgery, Hagen has never had a haircut from another barber.
