On January 25, 1998, two American tourists, Tom and Eileen Lonergan, vanished after a deep-sea diving charter boat abandoned the couple in shark infested waters off Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.
Having gone unnoticed for more than two days, search and rescue operations were finally initiated once the charter realized the couple had been indeed left behind. Despite significant effort by Australian rescue crews, the search for the American divers was in vain.
Believed to have been eaten by sharks, Tom and Eileen Lonergan were never heard from again.
Months after the incident, a fisherman 100 miles north of the site found a dive slate which records their thoughts as dawn broke the morning of January 26th. In a wobbly scrawl faded by months in the water, Tom Lonergan had written:
“Monday Jan 26; 1998; 08am. To anyone who can help us:
We have been abandoned by MV Outer Edge on
25; Jan 98; 3pm. Please HELP US before we die.”
