Lately, it seems that whenever I see an old abandoned train car, I can’t help but think about the people who were on board and by some unfortunate circumstance–whether it was bad luck or bad choices–had reached the end of the line.
I wonder what caused them to lose their way. I wonder how far they fell. But most of all, I wonder why they gave up.
JD Salinger, author of The Catcher in The Rye and creator of the character Holden Caufield, probably said it best; “The kind of fall associated with giving up is a special kind of fall, a horrible kind. The person falling isn’t permitted to feel or hear himself hit bottom. He just keeps falling and falling. The whole arrangement’s designed for men who, at some time or other in their lives, were looking for something their own environment couldn’t supply them with. So they finally just gave up looking.”
It must be a tragic thing to realize that, after years of searching, the only thing you have in your pockets is dust.
