AFTER DINNER

On the corner of Main St and Adair in Griswold, IA, there’s an old abandoned hotel that’s been standing for more than a hundred years. Lonesome and somber, most people who live in this small town won’t deny that there’s something alluring and strangely charming about this dilapidated structure.

In fact, there are some folks who will tell you with a wink that if you’re careful to time it just right and you wait until the early part of the evening…that magical time when the sun has just gone down and the cool breeze starts to blow…the time of the evening when old men get the urge to come down to the lobby to play cards and have a smoke (and old women come down just to get a better look at the old men)…you can still get your chance to make small talk.

The Hotel Arlington in Griswold, Iowa has been closed for decades but folks still talk about it as if it were in its prime. If only we had more things like that.
