Can’t sleep
Haunted by their faces
The sadness in their eyes…
The journey of a thousand nightmares
Where only the strong survive
~Sarah McLachlan, American Singer Songwriter
For those who were forced from their land by the Dust Bowl, more than one-quarter of the population found themselves destitute and homeless. Without hope, the only option many families had was to seek shelter in communal Boarding Houses. Overcrowded, disease-ridden, and rodent-infested, many wondered whether it would have been better to perish with their own homesteads rather than endure the harsh realities of life in these facilities.
In remote parts of Nebraska, Dust Bowl Boarding Houses still stand. Many people refuse to talk about them even to this day.
