IN THE HEART OF THE SEA

“The sea does not reward those who are too anxious, too
greedy, or too impatient. One should lie empty, open,
choiceless as a beach–waiting for a gift from the sea.”

~Anne Morrow Lindberg

The Bodie Island Lighthouse, located on the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, stands more than 156 feet high. For almost a century, lighthouse keepers spent countless hours making sure the lamp’s wicks were cleaned and properly trimmed and the lamp and lantern rooms’ windows spotless. Each evening, the keeper would faithfully haul buckets of oil from a nearby shed up the 214 steps to the lantern room to keep the light burning brilliantly until daybreak.
