“The white men came around the time of my grandfather’s
grandfather. Eventually we drove them out…They have been like
all the others. They take without asking. But I think you are right, I
think they will keep coming… our country is all that we have,
and we will fight to keep it.”

~Ten Bears, Dances With Wolves

In an attempt to displace the indigenous peoples from the Great Plains, Bison were slaughtered by the millions–with routine accounts recording the killing of as many as 10,000 per day. At one time, there were more than 60 million Bison roaming the grasslands of North America. Tragically, because of the radical eradication measures taken by the early white settlers, the Bison population was reduced to less than 10,000 by the early-20th century. Today, there are approximately 350,000 Bison in North America–most of which have been genetically bred and raised for slaughter by ranchers.

A slight morning fog creates a dreamlike haze enveloping these great creatures. The only continuously wild herd of American Bison resides in Yellowstone National Park.
