“If a man walks in the woods for love of them half of each day, he is in danger of being regarded as a loafer. But if he spends his days as a speculator, shearing off those woods and making the earth barren before her time, he is deemed an industrious and enterprising citizen.”
~John Muir, Preservationist and Sierra Club Founder
The Desoto National Wildlife Refuge, created in 1958, is located along the banks of the Missouri River on the border between Nebraska and Iowa. It is home to scores of mammal species and has become part of a major flyway for migratory birds including tens of thousands of snow geese. The 8,000+ acre refuge preserves an area that would have otherwise been lost to cultivation.
