MOON OVER THE MISSOURI

Photographs by David Hunnicutt
The Missouri River is the longest river in the United States. The headwaters are located in the Rocky Mountains of southern Montana near the town of Three Forks. After a journey of nearly 2,350 miles, it joins the Mississippi at St. Louis and then empties into the Gulf of Mexico.

On 3 August, 1804, Lewis and Clark camped for the night in this spot which is now a part of the DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge. In their journals, they made important observations about the Desoto Bend area. They described willow, oak, hickory, sycamore, and cottonwood trees; their first encounter with a badger, geese accompanied by their young, wood duck, crains of several kinds, and a flock of Pelicans that appeared to cover several acres. Their discoveries were the first recorded encounter with these species.

On quiet moonlit nights, you can almost hear their conversations.

What a breathtaking shot. I’ve driven by the Missouri I don’t know how many times and have never looked at it in this way.

It’s difficult for me to imagine how Lewis and Clark could have made the trek they did…but being introduced to this kind of beauty I can see how they were drawn into new lands every step of the way.
