“There’s nothing like biting off more than you
can chew, and then chewing anyway.”

~Mark Burnett

There are times when you run across a competition so intense that the experience is almost impossible to describe. Whatever physical or combative obstacles are put in front of the participants, they attack the challenge with such fierce aggression and determination that it gives you a remarkable glimpse into the stuff that’s resides deep down inside. Driven by something almost other-worldly, all you can do is stand back and watch in disbelief. When it’s all over, you know that they’ve held nothing back.

In a North American Strongman competition, the toughest men and women in the country compete against one another in a series of predetermined events and extreme encounters to see who will stand alone as North America’s Strongest Man. This series of photographs, taken at a regional qualifying event in Omaha, NE, is a set of random images that depict, in a very small way, the spectrum of physical and emotional extremes that an athlete goes through in this kind of challenge.
