“Rugby is a beastly game played my gentlemen…”

~Henry Blaha

Rugby is a game of violence. It is supposed to be. It is a game of brutal physical confrontations; individual against individual, group against group…Without violence rugby is nothing. Without violence there is no courage, without mayhem there is no grace, without pain there is no exalted relief in victory.

Simon Barnes wrote this marvelous essay in the London Times–and he’s right on the mark. Rugby is, indeed, a one-of-a-kind competition; which is why it is so beloved throughout the world.

Two American Rugby teams battle for possession in the scrum.
