“Real people are people who are comfortable with their own truth.
They embrace their own uniqueness. They do their own things and never
apologize for who they are. And, somehow, these kind of people are always
becoming more than they are.”
~Johnny Cash
I’ve come to the conclusion that there’s a lot to be said for armwrestling.
In fact, in many ways, it’s a big part of America–just not the America that most people think of as they drive back and forth from the Mall.
Rather, I’m talking about the America that feels more at home in smoky, run-down bars than in fancy restaurants; I’m talking about the America that’s populated by working stiffs who have carried a lunch bucket and a hard hat to and from work for the last 20 years; I’m talking about the America that’s filled with people who’d rather sit down at a table and compete face-to-face and hand-to-hand rather than stab their neighbors in the back at some cocktail party.
Although a lot of people will disagree me, armwrestling is a magnificent microcosm of America and the people are as real and as genuine as any I’ve ever met.
