“Whoso loves, believes the impossible.”
~Elizabeth Barret Browning
For more than a century, people from all over the world have come to northern New Mexico during the Holy weeks to visit Chimayo. Walking more than a hundred miles on the well-worn trail, the faithful carry their crosses until they reach the shrine. Once there, visitors offer up prayers and seek absolution. For those in desperate circumstances, many will take small handfuls of dirt from the Santuario in hopes of experiencing a divine healing for themselves or for someone else who was unable to make the trek.
Considered by many to be the most important Catholic pilgrimage in the U.S., Chimayo will draw more than 300,000 people annually.
