THE ENEMY WITHIN

Eleven years before Charles Manson told Americans to watch out for his homicidal followers, Charlie Starkweather and Caril Ann Fugate sent a message of fear and terror to those who made their homes in the nation’s heartland. In a killing spree that spanned eight days, Starkweather and Fugate traversed Nebraska leaving a trail of death and destruction in their wake. Tragically, their bloody trek across the heartland in the late 50’s represented a turning point of sorts–it taught Nebraskan’s that their enemies were not just in Moscow or Havana; instead they were having a bite to eat at the small town diner and hanging out at the local filling station.

To this day, Starkweather’s reign of terror remains fresh in the minds of the people of Nebraska.
