“Even now the axe is lying at the root of the tree; every tree that does not bear good fruit is therefore
cut down and thrown into the fire…one more powerful is coming after me…His winnowing
fork is in his hand…and the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”
New Testament Book of Matthew, Chapter 3, Verses 10-12
In the early part of the 20th century, legends of traveling evangelists performing great miracles and savings souls circulated throughout small towns all across the Great Plains. Driven by curiosity and the very real fear of eternal damnation, people turned out by the hundreds to take part in massive tent-based revivals. Women would travel for hours to get their children baptized. The infirmed came looking for miraculous healing and those close to death were escorted by friends and family in an attempt to make final peace.
But there were always those who remained behind.
Having been warned of the eternal consequences for being stiff-necked, many spent the rest of their lives in fear knowing that one day there would indeed come a judgment day.
