“When you got nothin’–you got nothin’ to lose.”
~Bob Dylan
People who live in small farming towns are different than the rest of us.
They live modestly. They’re kind and decent. And they’re conversations are simple (as one farmer told me, “it takes but a few words when your telling the truth.”)
But it was what I learned from an old-timer in the local coffee shop in Fostoria, KS that I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life.
Cradling his cup of coffee with both hands as he was looking out the window, he said, “It not the hard times that produce character young man, them’s just what reveals it.”
And while we are all busy wringing our hands over the implications of the country’s current financial mess, this guy will go on about his life as if nothing is happening.
I guess that reveals a lot about us, doesn’t it?
