“I don’t see’s there’s much difference between them up at the farmhouse and them down
in the graveyard; ‘cept that down there, they’re all quiet.”
~Edith Wharton, Author, taken from the novel, ‘Ethan Frome’
It’s a strange thing when hope dies.
There’s really no explaining it, except to say that all the life disappears from people’s eyes and every new day starts looking like the one before and the one before that.
It’s hard to say why it happens, or when for that matter. But one thing is for sure; when hope dies, there’s no coming back.
In the early part of the 1930’s, the good people of Inavale, NE somehow made their way through both the Great Depression and the Great Dust Bowl. But years of going without changed these people. Having lost everything, many moved on in search of better lives. Those who remained behind turned inward and bitter. With no hope of recovery, Inavale–and most of its people–slowly faded out of sight.
Today, Inavale is a ghost town.
