“How difficult to imagine this place without a human presence; how necessary. I am
almost prepared to believe that this sweet primitive land will be grateful for our departure
and, in our absence, will breathe a metaphoric sigh of relief—like a whisper of wind—when
we are all, and finally, gone and the place and its’ creations can return to their ancient procedures
unobserved and undisturbed by the brooding consciousness of man.
~Edward Abbey, taken from the novel ‘Desert Solitaire’
Pristine and utterly undisturbed for more than a thousand years, Utah’s deserts are undoubtedly some of the country’s greatest geographical treasures. Having wandered miles and miles of this naught-often traveled territory–all made possible by the kindness of good friends–its impact on me has been profound. Forever changed because of this experience, I know now that there is little that can rival the rugged beauty of Utah’s southern deserts…and even less that can separate true friends.
