“Farewell to foreign shores, we sail at the break of day.
Though our last night ashore, drink to the foam.
Until we meet once more, Anchor’s aweigh my boys,
Here’s wishing you a happy voyage home.”
~Forgotten Stanza’s of The Navy Hymn, 2nd Lieutenant Joshua Zimmerman,
Bandmaster of the Naval Academy Band, 1887
Saying goodbye is never easy–and this is certainly the case when it’s a loved one. But for a career Navy man like my Father, the ultimate send-off is to be laid to rest with honors. And although the process is difficult for those of us who have been left behind, it is both remarkable and reassuring to know that he is finally and forever home.
