WHILE DETROIT SLEPT

When you travel the vast central plains of the U.S., you never know what you’re going to see.

Case in point; Carhenge.

Carhenge is a replica of England’s Stonehenge located near the city of Alliance on the High Plains of western Nebraska. Instead of being built with large standing stones, as is the case with the original Stonehenge, Carhenge is formed from vintage American automobiles, each covered with gray spray paint.

Specifically, Carhenge consists of 38 automobiles arranged in a circle measuring about 29 metres (95 ft) in diameter. Some are held upright in pits 1.5 metres (4.9 ft) deep, trunk end down.  The arches have been formed by welding automobiles atop the supporting models. The heelstone is a 1962 Cadillac. In addition, three cars were buried in entirety at Carhenge. Their “gravestone” is a car that reads: “Here lie three bones of foreign cars. They served our purpose while Detroit slept.”

Built by Jim Reinders, Carhenge was appropriately dedicated during the June 1987 summer solstice–it is as close to a “Twin Peaks” moment as you’ll ever come.
