ONE HORSE TOWN

Photographs by David Hunnicutt

Last light
No fight
Want out
Tonight

Begging you to make it right

So God if you can hear me

Burn this town
To the ground
Spent half my life
Trying to turn the other half around

Burn this town
Burn it down

Can’t see
Can’t breathe
But I
can’t leave

Make the decision for me

So God if you can hear me

Burn this town
Burn it down

One horse town
Burn it down

God if you can hear me
Burn it down

In the epic struggle between days and dreams, it’s the unfortunate soul living in a one horse town that gets caught in the crossfire.  Usually too stubborn to give in but far too timid to leave, wrestling free from the grip of a dying town is an awfully hard thing to do.  For those of us who grew up in small towns, we understand this predicament all too well.

Walking the deserted streets of Ashton on a lonely Sunday evening, the words of this entry pretty much wrote themselves.

Main Street, Ashton, NE (pop. 473)
