DRIVING DANGEROUSLY

Photographs by David Hunnicutt

Lately I’ve been spending too much time and energy trying to get from here to there.

And the older I get, the more I’m finding that this is an inherently dangerous activity.

It’s kind of like driving 80 in a 30 mph zone.  As you punch down on the accelerator, everything on the periphery begins to disappear; your hands tighten on the wheel; your posture stiffens; your vision narrows and the only thing that matters is what’s right in front of you.

Do it long enough and pretty soon it’s all you know how to do.

But not today.

Settling into this sidewalk cafe with one of the people I love most in this world, the whole thing is immense; slow and deliberate; no ghosts; nothing to remember; nothing more to do.

It’s a moment that’s pure and healthy–and I can feel it.

All of it.
