I know a place so vast, so immense, so overwhelming, it will literally swallow you whole. From horizon to horizon, there’s nothing except a razor-thin line that separates the earth from the sky and an endless ribbon of blacktop that divides it in two. Clouds float majestically by; infinite in number.
In this place, there is no beginning and there is no end. Here, you and I are of no consequence; we are outsiders; intruders; our voices are not heard and our presence is not felt. Overpowered and outmatched, this extraordinary territory will steal your breath away and then, not being satisfied with such a modest response, it will force you to your knees.
But it is here—swallowed up in a country so ponderous you can see 50 miles in every direction—that we come to understand our place in the grand scheme of things; a revelation that, by its very nature, is so powerful it is worthy of being experienced by anyone who has breath left in their lungs and knees upon which to fall. Indeed to experience this place is to be changed from the inside out.
To the great Creator of the universe, thank you with ever fiber of my being for giving us a place where we can still be swallowed whole and I am grateful beyond measure that you have allowed me to pass through it safely during my days upon this earth.
