THE LION’S SHARE

As a January moon ambles unconcerned across the open sky, winter’s chill weighs heavy on the night air.   Turning up my collar, I gaze into the emptiness of this place.  The wind that blows through the canyon carries on it the voices of those long dead; restless; weary and destined to wander.  Forever banished to languish in the shadows of what might have been; this is a hard land—an unforgiving place. And for those settlers seeking the lion’s share, it is a destiny everlasting.

Bannack is a ghost town in Beaverhead County, Montana. Founded in 1862, it was the site of a major gold discovery and served briefly as the capital of the Montana Territory.  For years on end, ambitious speculators came to Bannack in search of earthly riches.  Most, having gambled and lost, still call Bannack home.
